Leaders Defined: What Is The Definition Of Leadership?

leaders definedWhile it’s usually a very easy thing to define the leader of a given group or organization, actually defining leadership is a slightly more difficult task.  Leaders, defined in a textbook way, are people who are good at organizing others in a group and moving them toward a common goal.  But the actual definition of leadership and management in the real world can differ vastly from examples you might find in books.

Every successful leader or manager has a different personality, traits, tactics and styles that they use to organize their team and find success.  While some leaders are good at using their own intuition to make big gains through taking chances, other leaders are more methodical and rely on research and data to make decisions.  Some leaders allow autonomy in their team members, while others are micro-managers who like to know what each person in the group is doing.

Defining leadership is fine for students who are writing a paper for class, but it’s dangerous to use any kind of strict litmus test for choosing leaders and managers in your organization.  Because the individual personalities of successful leaders can vary so widely, it’s often not easy to define a potential leader just by looking at their personality type.  Instead, it’s best to put potential leaders into a role that allows them to manage a small project and observe how they interact, inspire and lead their group.

As we’ve said before on this website, the most important trait for a future leader to have is a very simple one: simply the desire to lead and move the organization toward success.  Many leadership and management tactics can be taught, and individuals will temper those tactics with their own management styles and personalities.  Leaders, defined, are simply individuals who are able to successfully move your organization toward its shared aspiration.  As long as your leaders and managers are able to accomplish this in an ethical and productive way that doesn’t demoralize their team members, then you should embrace whatever leadership style they use to get there.
